10th International Day of Yoga celebrations in the Greater Seattle area

The Consulate General of India in Seattle, in collaboration with esteemed local partners, hosted two exclusive events to celebrate the 10th International Day of Yoga (IDY). These events, held on Friday, June 21st, underscored the importance of daily yoga practice on overall health and well-being.

The morning event, held in collaboration with the Chihuly Garden and Glass, welcomed participants to a serene setting where they immersed themselves in yoga practice. Against the backdrop of Dale Chihuly’s mesmerizing glass art, attendees experienced the union of mind, body, and soul.

Consul General of India in Seattle emphasized the importance of yoga as a holistic way of life, promoting well-being and inner harmony.

Sadhvi Bhagavati ji from Parmarth Ashram Rishikesh addressed the gathering as Guest of Honour and welcomed the IDY initiative of the Prime Minister of India and encouraged participants to develop a holistic approach to lifestyle based on India's gift to the world of Yoga.

The distinguished participants also included members of the diplomatic corps from Seattle, as well as former Seahawks players like Lofa Tatupu and Kerry Carter, and senior Vice President of Seattle Seahawks Team Mike Flood. Other dignitaries included Mr. John Oppenheimer, Founder and CEO of Columbia Hospitality.

In a separate afternoon celebration, the Indian Consulate partnered with Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) in Tacoma with participants from diverse backgrounds coming together to practice yoga, fostering connections and cultural exchange. The event highlighted the theme of “Yoga for Self and Society,” emphasizing the interconnectedness of individual well-being and community health. Dignitaries participating at the PLU IDY celebrations included President of PLU Mr. Allan Belton, Pierce County Executive Pro Tempore Dave Morell and the event featured a special address by Guest of Honour Dr. Gauri Mahulikar, Academic Director of Chinmay International Foundation.

In a special gesture, FOUR separate Proclamations were issued by The King County, Pierce County, and cities of Bellevue and Seattle officially welcoming the theme of the celebrations of June 21st as the “Day of Yoga for Self and Society.” These proclamations recognize the transformative power of yoga and its positive impact on individuals and communities.

Background Information:

The International Day of Yoga was proposed by India under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On June 21, 2014, the United Nations adopted the resolution, co-sponsored by 177 member nations, to establish this global celebration. Since then, all 193 member countries have embraced this shared practice, uniting the world in a collective pursuit of well-being and inner balance. The date, coinciding with the Summer Solstice, symbolizes harmony with nature.
