Hon’ble Governor Greg Gianforte Unveils the First Bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Montana

Hon’ble Governor Greg Gianforte of Montana, along with the Consul General of India in Seattle, unveiled the first bust of Mahatma Gandhi in the State of Montana at the prestigious Mike Mansfield Center, University of Montana in Missoula, on 3 March 2026.

The bust, presented as a gift from the Government of India, stands as a tribute to the timeless ideals of peace and non-violence espoused by Mahatma Gandhi. The installation also reflects the growing engagement and friendship between India and the State of Montana.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Gianforte remarked that “Gandhi’s life reminds us that leadership starts with character. The inscription on the bust features a quote attributed to Gandhi that good ideas mean nothing without action. That message resonates here in Montana.”

The ceremony was attended by First Lady of Montana Susan Gianforte, senior officials from the State of Montana, faculty and students of the University of Montana, and members of the Montana World Affairs Council.
