NRI Certificate can only be issued to Indian passport holders.
Please follow the 2 steps given below to apply for an NRI Certificate.

Step 1) Prepare Supporting Documents

Checklist for Indian Passport Holders

1.	Official Government Application Form (Click Here) (Download, Fill and Sign the official government application form)
2.	Applicant's Photograph – 2" x 2" Size Paste the applicant’s photo on the Government Application Form. To know more about photo specifications (Click Here)
3.	Entry and Exit Form (Click Here) (Please fill out and Sign the form)
4.	NRI Sponsership Explanatory Letter (Click Here) (Please fill out and Sign the Letter)
5.	Notarized copy of the current passport (first and last pages)
6.	Notarized copy of proof of U.S. legal status showing a valid U.S. visa
7.	Notarized copy of proof of address in the U.S.

Checklist for USA Passport and OCI Holders

1.	Official Government Application Form (Click Here) (Download, Fill and Sign the official government application form)
2.	Applicant's Photograph – 2" x 2" Size Paste the applicant’s photo on the Government Application Form. To know more about photo specifications (Click Here)
3.	Original Power of Attorney (Notarized) Applicant's Signature on PoA should match with the signature in the current valid passport. Please Stick Applicant’s Photo at Last Page of Power of Attorney. 2 Witnesses should sign the POA Note: Witnesses can not be your Spouse or Blood Relatives.
4.	Original and Copy of: Passport and Address Proof of USA and OCI (Front & Last Page)
4.	Notarized copy of the current passport
5.	Notarized copy of OCI (first and last pages)
6.	Notarized copy of proof of address in the U.S.
7.	Photocopy of the PoA Document (Make the copy only after the Notarization & Signing is done)
6.	Fees (for 1 Applicant) : $20 and $2 (Please issue 2 Separate Cashier’s Checks/Money Orders) Fees (for 2 Applicants) : $40 and $4 (Please issue 2 Separate Cashier’s Checks/Money Orders) Payee Name “Consulate General of India, Seattle” Note: Personal Checks/Cash/Credit Cards/Debit Cards are not accepted.

FAQs on NRI Certificate

How do I apply for an NRI Certificate?

Stage 1 – Submission

Follow the 2 steps mentioned above to submit the required documents to VFS Global (either in person or by mail).

Stage 2 – VFS Review

VFS Global reviews the documents. If the application is complete, VFS forwards the file to the Consulate.

(Note: If any documents are missing, VFS Global will notify the applicant by email. The applicant must submit the requested documents within 21 business days. Failure to do so will result in rejection of the application.)

Stage 3 – Consulate Processing

The Consulate verifies the application, processes it, and returns it to VFS Global.

Stage 4 – Closure

VFS Global closes the application and dispatches the processed documents to the applicant.

What is the processing time for NRI Certificate?

10 business days from the day application reaches the Consulate.

What documents are accepted as proof of address in the U.S.?

• US Driving License OR

• Utility Bill OR

• Lease Agreement OR

• State Identity Card OR

• Mortgage Deed

What Documents are accepted as proof of US Visa Status?

• Visa page of Passport (i.e. H1B, H4, L1, L2 etc.) OR

• Green Card. OR

• Employment Authorization Document (Work Permit) OR

• I-797, I-140 or I-20

1.	How can one apply for NRI Certificate ?	Depending on if you are (Indian Passport Holder OR USA Passport and OCI Holder OR USA Passport Holder), Please go through the checklist which is applicable to you, and bring the Application with Supporting documents to the Consulate between 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
2.	Does one need to make an appointment for NRI Certificate ?	Applicants may walk into the Consulate on any working day as per below: Timing for submitting the documents: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Timing for collection of the documents:Next day 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
3.	What is the processing time for NRI Certificate ?	One day (Next Day), for the application submitted in Person/over the counter.

7.	If I am sending my application via Physical Mail - Should I send my original Documents along?	No, For Physical Mail Applications - Please send all the supporting Documents Notarized.
